Bio and Resume
Erin Haldane is a mixed-media artist working primarily within watercolor illustration, block printing, and oil painting. She’s inspired by her family heritage, love of animals, domestic spaces, symbolism and archetypes, as well as the natural world, and seeks to express the subtle magic of the everyday within each of her pieces. She finds that her dreams and inner world is best expressed through her fantastical illustrations and prints and that her observation, appreciation, and meditation of the beauty of the physical world around her is best manifested through oil paint and pencil in her larger works. Haldane is mostly self-taught in the style of Formline and has been studying it for several years, incorporating it into her studio practice as a way to honor her family and maintain her culture. As a person of mixed heritage, she finds it very important to express her unique perspective, rather than act as a representative for peoples outside of her immediate family. She believes in the power of art and mark-making to bring people together, transform lives, and celebrate our shared experiences as well as our beautiful and indispensable diversity.
Haldane is native Alaskan, Tsimshian and was born in and spent most of her childhood in Anchorage, Alaska. She moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2000 and received her BFA from Santa Fe University of Art and Design in 2014. Haldane has moved around extensively throughout her adult life, frequently visiting her birth place of Alaska, living in Washington state, Brooklyn, New York, and Portland, Oregon, before returning to her forever home of New Mexico in 2021. Meanwhile, she has maintained a rigorous studio practice and her work has been shown both internationally and locally. She self-published a Tarot Deck, The Heartspun Tarot, in 2020 (now out of print), spent years working at artisan markets, and selling her work online, and she is now set to graduate from the Institute of American Indian Arts with a Masters in Studio Arts in 2027. She also currently works for the non-profit arts and community organization, Vital Spaces Santa Fe, as an administrative manager, the Art Closet program organizer, as well as doing some curatorial and event coordination work.
Haldane hopes to continue to make art the center of her life while sharing her knowledge, experience, and skills with others, as a teacher, community member, and artist.
